Hi Ashley, tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hello! I'm Ashley. I was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley and as a huge foodie, I've always loved all of the food offerings we have here. French fries, chocolate chip cookies, and an oat milk latte are the last treats I'd want to have on Earth. Once upon a time before being at Disney, I thought I was going to pursue a career in fashion, and was even once a part of New York Fashion Week. Pre-COVID, I loved going to music festivals, but nowadays, you can find me doing some deep digging into true crime stories.
‍

Can you tell us what you do as Social Engagement Strategist at Disney for those who are unfamiliar?

As a Social Engagement Strategist for Disney+, I execute digital marketing campaigns for Original Movies and Series, as well as select brand initiatives. Tasks for my role include managing the social plans for assets, scripting digital liners for celebrities, analyzing content performance, and more.
‍‍

How did you decide to pursue your specific career?‍

While I was pursuing a career in fashion, I accidentally stumbled upon social media marketing during an internship at a small apparel company that had me wearing multiple hats. It was love at first sight.
‍
Fast forward to my senior year in collegeβ€”I was applying for post-graduation jobs and wanted to try for roles at Disney (even though it wasn't a fashion company) since I've always admired the brand. Thankfully, Disney gave me a shot. Since working for this brand, I've grown to really love the entertainment space, and the amazing storytelling it brings to fans around the world.
‍

What made you interested in your field? What do you like about it?

Upon entering college, I initially chose marketing as my major as a facade for my traditional Asian parents, who I feared would judge my interest in the fashion industry. As I worked to gain experience in the business of fashion, I found my passion for social media marketing.

From there, I decided to take my major seriously and gain more experience in the fieldβ€”ranging from participating in a marketing program hosted at the Google HQ to exploring market research at my university. I couldn't believe that I had spent those previous years overlooking a career in marketing!
‍

Any advice on how to stand out and get hired for those starting off?

Think like you're already working in the role you're applying for and use that mindset to identify suggestions that you could bring to the table.
‍

What are 3 character traits that would make someone excel in your field?

Creativity, curiosity, and resilience
‍

What fuels you to continue to do what you do?

Knowing that I have the opportunity to directly connect with real people, and hopefully bring joy to their day (even if it's just for a moment) through the content I produce.
‍

Most difficult thing about your job?

The social media space is constantly changing at a rapid pace. There are always emerging platforms to learn and trends to be on top of.
‍

What would you like to say to your younger self?

Stop putting yourself down by constantly comparing yourself to your peers. Your time will come when it's meant to come. Just keep on chasing your dreams.
‍

Best advice you've received/heard?

At the end of the day, you don't owe anyone else anything. Focus on your mental health and don't forget that you always come first.
‍

Any last thoughts, advice, or recommendations for someone who wants to learn more about social media marketing?

You don't have to already be working for a company to test your skills in social media marketing. Give it a try for yourself! Create content about that things you love and build your own personal brand or presence across different platforms.
